Marlayna Glynn became an unlikely voice for childhood suffering when she burst onto the literary scene with OVERLAY, the Next Generation prize-winning memoir of her early childhood in 1970s Las Vegas. Then came ANGELES, the author's account of her dedication to construct the life of her dreams.

Now is the author's testimony about how the sins of the fathers threatened her with a long-in-coming crippling depression. Readers will find AS ALL HELL an urgent enlightenment for adult children of alcoholics everywhere. In bold fashion featuring her heartbreaking honesty, the author records the trials and surprises she faced with single parenthood and resultant clinical depression. The author's prose creates a lasting impact on readers driven to understand the lingering, indelible effects of an unfortunate childhood.

As All Hell Memoirs of Marlayna Glynn Book 3 eBook Marlayna Glynn

Marlayna Glynn Brown's third volume in her trilogy describes her battles with savage depression and her constant hope that she can find someone who will love her as deeply and as a truly as she loves them. When her relationship ends with Michael her psyche attacks her with the ferocity of a rabid wolf, nearly killing her. Her mother's failure to offer help at this most desperate moment of Marlayna's adult life staggers both her and any reader with half a soul. It is a moment replete with all the disappointments of a lost childhood condensed in one brutal realization that our deepest desire for some people to be more than they are can shatter against a reality colder than an arctic winter. Marlayna literally crawls out of depression one millimeter at a time and resumes her life. This memoir is a journey in self-examination lived not as a victim but as a searcher always hoping that the universe will smile the next day. The author asks several questions of herself. Perhaps the most searing query is "Why am I not enough?" The answer suggested is that finding someone who sees any one of us as enough is a challenge that may consume a lifetime. And, perhaps, even more critically, is that moment when we find that we are more adequate than we believed, that those who reject are more deeply wounded or lost than we imagined. Marlayna's tale is compelling, painful, joyous, and riveting.

The Tale of a Gutsy Texas Immigrant............

It was tough gaining a foothold in this memoir, at first it seemed fictional, but then the reality occurred. Somehow, I empathized with the character or protagonist in this story given that I'm a male, and much less than she would consider the real one. But, this woman is a total survivor, seemingly. There are some discrepancies with time, place and natural occurrences, but overall a well constructed memoir. I'm a little concerned about the fact that she was near death from not eating and moping, and subsequently became whole again, and continued on with her life; no explanation of her healing process that had to take months, and no story to validate this time in her life. The whole of it was tragic which is not my forte. I'm more attuned to happy upbeat scenarios but, purchasing ebooks is a throw of the dice. Over all I gave this particular a five star rating because she did what she did, and a little more so than 35% of our population who are single women trying to care for their children. These women do what they have to do to survive, and some don't.

I give this a five star mainly because of the aching need for some recompense for this tragic life cycle; please let's do something.
I genuinely like Marlayna Glynn Brown as a person and she has my utmost admiration. However, the last book in her memior seems tedious and unrelenting. I would like to have read more about her children in this one but she might not wish to expose too much of their private lives. She's a world wanderer and traveler perhaps because on a smaller scale that is how she lived as a child, always moving. Marlayna was an intelligent, beautiful child whose parents were never proud of her accomplishments and never showed their love for her. She dated some affectionate, nice guys but married a man "who was never proud of her accomplishments and never showed his love for her". In spite of this, they both seem like terrific parents to their four children. Marlayna's agony expressed in this book concerning her disappointments in love is draining. Her bouts with anorexia and anger towards her mother for not coming to her rescue. I was bewildered that Marlayna would consider leaving her own children in her mother's care...strange. But she had come to the end of her rope and couldn't think or reason, let alone care for herself and kids.
Sometimes you read memoirs and appreciate the story even if you don't necessarily relate to it. Then, there are the memoirs you read that make you stop and wonder when someone decided to put your story in print.
Though vastly different in many ways, Marlayna Glynn Brown's story had enough similarities to my own that I felt comforted, inspired and profoundly connected to this amazing woman.
Depression is an illness that carries with it far too much stigma. Glynn Brown's story is a reminder that even the strongest people in the world can fall, through no fault of their own. What those people need is understanding, patience, and immense support, not to mention immense admiration for being incredible survivors.
While far from the first book about depression out there, I found Glynn Brown's one of the best because it is one of the truest. Instead of shying away from the intensity and starkness that is depression, Glynn Brown brings readers fully inside, offering them a powerful taste of what it's like when depression hold you in its talons.
Better than the understanding of what depression can be like is Glynn Brown's reminder of how important it is to hold onto hope. She is a first-class survivor who has channeled her energies into making the world a better place, with spirit.
I'm just fatigued with all the relationships and jobs. It seems like her repetitive patterns never change. I think the editor could have cut out a few relationships, or condensed them into one or two men. The reader doesn't really need to fall in love with each man and go through the honeymoon phase with her, followed by disillusionment, followed again by break up.... what? 5 times? 6? in one memoir. Same with the jobs. It leads me to belive the narrator is unreliable, and not as a literary technique. What is the one common denominator here....? If she was a girlfriend of mine, I'd have gotten frustrated long ago.
On the other hand, the writing is excellent and several phrases were memorable and other parts gripping. Her description of depression is worthy of the chapters allotted.
